Common Air Conditioner Problems
When it comes to air conditioners we all love them when they work and curse them when they won’t. We live in Florida – it’s hot pretty much year round. We depend on our AC units.
Today we would like to take look at just a few of the most common complaints we hear from customers when it comes to their air conditioning units and how we can help.
“My air conditioner won’t turn on” – This is by far the biggest complaint. Before you freak out and assume you need a new unit, here are a few things to try.
- Look at the thermostat and make sure that it is set to cool and on. Try to adjust the setting to heat instead and see if it kicks on.
- Look and see if there is dirt or build up on the filters. If so change the filter and clean the area, it may turn on right away after doing so.
- Look at the unit itself and see if there is any ice forming, it will remind you of how your freezer may look if it needs to be defrosted. Let the ice melt off and then try to restart.
“My AC unit is blowing warm air” – to assess the issue:
- Make sure the breakers are on.
- Make sure the thermostat is set to cool and crank the temperature down.
- Check that the humidistat is set to on.
- If all of this checks out, yet still no cold air is being blown you will need to call in an HVAC tech. You may have a Freon leak or other issue.
“My house feels humid” – Dehumidifying the home is part of the AC units purpose. If your house feels humid and the AC is on, there is most definitely an issue. This needs to be checked by a professional.
“The AC won’t get down to the set temperature” – Try to reset your thermostat. Check the unit outside to make sure the fan belt looks like its working smoothly. There could be underlying issues which if left unchecked could end up breaking the unit and being costly. If your AC won’t get cold enough, call us and let us check it out.
“My electric bill keeps going up” – Did you know that here in SW Florida your air conditioning can account for as much as 50% of your power bill? The older your unit is, the less energy efficient and effective it is. If it is over 10 years old, you may want to consider revaluating based on how long you plan to own the home if a new unit might just make a money-wise investment.
